Dry Ridge & Dry Verge

Mechanically Fixed Ridges & Verges

Ridge tiles and verges have traditionally been bedded in mortar, and mortar does not last on an exposed roof. It cracks as the roof moves, washes out in the rain and leaves ridge tiles rocking in the wind. A dry ridge and dry verge system does the same job without relying on mortar at all.

Each ridge tile is screwed or clipped to a continuous ridge batten over a ventilated roll, and the verge edges are finished with interlocking caps fixed to the battens. Every piece is held mechanically, so the ridge stays put in high winds and air can move out along the top of the roof.

It is fitted as standard on new roofs, and it can be fitted to an existing roof where the mortar has failed, without re-roofing. You get a FREE, no-obligation quotation and straight advice on whether your ridge needs re-bedding or a dry system.

Signs Your Ridge Needs a Dry Fix

  • Crumbling Ridge Mortar

Mortar falling from under the ridge tiles onto the drive or the garden means the bedding has broken down.

  • Rocking Ridge Tiles

Ridge tiles that move or lift in the wind are no longer bonded to the roof and can come down in a storm.

  • Gaps at the Verge

Open joints along the gable edge let wind-driven rain and birds in under the tiles at the side of the roof.

  • Repointing Again

A ridge or verge that needs repointing every few years is a good candidate for a mortar-free dry fix system.

Pricing

What Affects the Cost of a Dry Ridge

Every roof is different, so the price is worked out once the roof has been looked at rather than guessed over the phone. These are the things that move it.

Dry Ridge & Dry Verge work on a roof

FREE, No-Obligation Quotations

Every roof is looked at before it is priced, so the figure you get is the figure for your job. Your quotation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

  • Length of Ridge & Verge

The total run of ridge, hips and gable verges sets how many parts are needed and how long fitting takes.

  • New or Existing Roof

Fitting to an existing roof means lifting and cleaning the old ridge first, which adds labour to the job.

  • Ridge Tiles to Replace

Cracked or broken ridge tiles found when they are lifted are replaced with matching ones before refixing.

  • Access to the Ridge

Some ridges can be reached with roof ladders, while others need a tower or scaffold for safe working.

FAQs

Dry Ridge & Verge Questions Answered

Can a Dry Ridge Be Fitted to My Existing Roof?

Yes. The old ridge tiles are lifted, the mortar is cleaned off and a dry ridge system is fitted beneath them, so the roof does not need replacing. It is a common fix where ridge mortar keeps cracking and falling out.

Is Dry Ridge Better Than Mortar Bedding?

For most roofs, yes. Mortar cracks and washes out as the roof moves and weathers, while a dry system holds every ridge tile mechanically. It needs far less upkeep and stays secure in high winds, which is why it is fitted on new roofs.

Will My Existing Ridge Tiles Be Used Again?

Usually. Sound ridge tiles are cleaned and fixed back with the new system. Any that are cracked or broken are replaced with tiles matched as closely as possible, and you will be told before the quotation is agreed.

What Does a Dry Verge Do?

A dry verge closes off the gable edge of the roof with interlocking caps clipped to the battens, instead of a mortar fillet. It keeps wind-driven rain and birds out from under the edge tiles and does not need repointing.

Does a Dry Ridge Help Ventilate the Loft?

Many systems do. The ridge roll lets air move out along the top of the roof while keeping rain out, which can help reduce condensation in the roof space. We will advise on whether that suits the ventilation in your loft.
